Northern bred queens will be available the third week of June. Queens will be available through out the season if you have plans to requeen or start a nucleus hive, or "nuc".
Requeening you will want to requeen when you have an old queen, a poorly laying queen, no queen or an angry hive. Some beekeepers requeen to change the race of bees they have.
Nucleus hives are made from splitting an existing strong hive. Splitting a hive can be done for several reasons such as gaining additional hives to increase ones apiary or to prevent swarming of a hive that is crowded. You will need a nuc box with bottom board and cover, some extra frames, an entrance reducer and a way to feed 1:1 syrup. Also you will need to decide whether to purchase a caged queen for your nuc (the easiest), use a supersedure or swarm cell (not for most beginners), or to do a walk away hive split (recommended for seasoned beekeepers).
